Hello Fellow Crocheters,
After reading a number of articles on how ChatGPT generates bizarre crochet patterns, I quickly did a search on Google for “ChatGPT crochet flower patterns” and it did not yield any results (when I searched at least…).
So, I decided to try it for crochet flower patterns by myself.
First of all, What is ChatGPT?
“ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence chatbot developed by OpenAI and launched in November 2022. It is built on top of OpenAI’s GPT-3 family of large language models and has been fine-tuned using both supervised and reinforcement learning techniques.” – From Wikipedia
Simply, if you type “recipe for cake”, it will give you a step-by-step recipe with ingredients list.
What did I ask for ? What was granted?
I asked for a ” crochet flower pattern”, expecting a 5-petal , 4-petal flower pattern but what I got was something unexpected…
Something similar to a bellflower pattern.
Crochet Pattern by ChatGPT
Sure, here is a simple crochet flower pattern:
Materials:
- Worsted weight yarn in desired color
- Crochet hook size H/8-5.00mm
- Tapestry needle
Pattern:
Chain 4 and slip stitch to first chain to create a ring.
Round 1: Chain 2 (counts as first double crochet), work 11 more double crochets into the ring. Join with a slip stitch to the top of the beginning chain 2. (12 stitches total)
Round 2: Chain 3 (counts as first double crochet and chain 1), skip the next stitch, double crochet in the next stitch, chain 1, skip the next stitch Repeat from * to * around. Join with a slip stitch to the top of the beginning chain 3. (6 chain-1 spaces)
Round 3: Slip stitch into the first chain-1 space, chain 2 (counts as first double crochet), work 2 more double crochets into the same chain-1 space, work 3 double crochets into the next chain-1 space Repeat from * to * around. Join with a slip stitch to the top of the beginning chain 2. (18 stitches total)
Round 4: Chain 2 (counts as first half double crochet), chain 3, slip stitch into the top of the next double crochet Repeat from * to * around. Join with a slip stitch to the beginning half double crochet. Fasten off and weave in ends.
Your crochet flower is now complete! You can use it to embellish hats, scarves, bags, or any other crochet project you like. Experiment with different colors and yarn weights to create a variety of flowers. Enjoy!
Though the recommended yarn is worsted weight. I was super happy to try it out with my DMC crochet thread No:80. I started reading the pattern, then….
Found these mistakes…
I must admit that there are a very few mistakes not as bad as the amigurumi pattern mentioned here . I have explained them here.
1. Repeat from * to * around
I didn’t know what to repeat as there were no “*” in the previous lines.
2. Irregular/Missing stitches
Round 4: Chain 2 (counts as first half double crochet), chain 3, slip stitch into the top of the next double crochet Repeat from * to * around. Join with a slip stitch to the beginning half double crochet. Fasten off and weave in ends.
In Round 4, the CH 2 is counted as HDC, but there are no other HDCs in Round 4. Even though it didn’t make a much of difference when you crochet the flower, it may be confusing for more intricate patterns.
So I fixed the pattern…
Chain 4 and slip stitch to first chain to create a ring.
Round 1: Chain 2 (counts as first double crochet), work 11 more double crochets into the ring. Join with a slip stitch to the top of the beginning chain 2. (12 stitches total)
Round 2: Chain 3 (counts as first double crochet and chain 1), *skip the next stitch, double crochet in the next stitch, chain 1, skip the next stitch*. Repeat from * to * around. Join with a slip stitch to the top of the beginning chain 3. (6 chain-1 spaces)
Round 3: Slip stitch into the first chain-1 space, chain 2 (counts as first double crochet), work 2 more double crochets into the same chain-1 space, *work 3 double crochets into the next chain-1 space* . Repeat from * to * around. Join with a slip stitch to the top of the beginning chain 2. (18 stitches total)
Round 4: Chain 2 (counts as first half double crochet), *chain 3, half double crochet into the top of the next double crochet* Repeat from * to * around. Join with a slip stitch to the beginning half double crochet. Fasten off and weave in ends.
Left one is the modified pattern and Right flower is the original pattern..
I am impressed with the ChatGPT’s ability to create crochet patterns.
These few mistakes can be fixed easily, may be they are being fixed right at this moment. I am excited to try some more crochet patterns by different AI engines and compare them with ChatGPT.
Will you use ChatGPT for crochet patterns?
Thanks for reading!
