Balance – My word of the year

Balance!

I chose “Balance” as the word of the year.

After experiencing prolonged stress from my Ph.D. and not being able to be present for my little star, I took a step back from what I was doing for the past year wrong to feel this way. Reflections upon reflections; I found the stress from professional life seeping into my personal life. I am ashamed to say, but it is what it is, I realized that I did not have a balance in my life; from salt on the food to the amount of work I do.

The main thing I want to incorporate in my day-to-day life is to know when to stop and let go of things. Sometimes in our life, we hold on to physical possessions and emotional possessions that weigh us down. Realizing that the shackles we put ourselves can be broken by convincing us that it is okay to live a simple happy life is mindblowing. I came to the understanding that one of the many ways to find contentment and happiness is by holding on to the beautiful, soul-soothing memories and letting go of the angry words and toxic positivity.

Life is a balance of holding on and letting go

To remind me of things I have learned, I wanted some sort of a token. I decided to get a pendant made; a simple disc with “Balance” written on it. I asked Erinn from Off on a whim if she could make me one by New year. Erinn makes beautiful handcrafted natural gemstone jewelry. She is one of the few who has inspired me to start my small business. Though it was a last-minute order, she was gracious enough to accept my request. As someone who is obsessed with Silver, I wanted it to be made with shiny white metal I love.

I can say that this is one of the most prized pieces of jewelry I own.

I read somewhere that, words are just a collection of letters, but they become so powerful when you put meaning into them. A meaningful word or an array of them can change your life.

What about you?

What is your word for this year?
